INSiGHT Scans: A Deeper Look at Your Nervous System

When your child is struggling with sleep, digestion, focus, sensory overload, emotional regulation, or frequent sickness, it is natural to focus on the symptoms you can see.

But symptoms only tell us part of the story.

At Innate Family Chiropractic, one of the most important questions we ask is:

How well is your child’s nervous system actually functioning, regulating, and adapting?

That is where INSiGHT Scans come in.

These scans allow us to look beyond symptoms and gather objective information about patterns of stress within the nervous system. Instead of simply asking where your child hurts or what symptoms they are experiencing, we are able to take a deeper look at how their body is responding to the stress placed upon it.

It is one of the reasons we often say:

We don’t guess. We test.

Why We Start With the Nervous System

Your nervous system is your body’s communication and coordination system.

It constantly receives information about what is happening inside and outside your body, processes that information, and then coordinates an appropriate response.

It helps regulate things you consciously control, like movement, as well as countless functions that happen automatically, including heart rate, digestion, temperature regulation, sleep-wake cycles, and the stress response.

Your nervous system also plays an important role in how you respond to your environment—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

That is a huge job.

And for kids whose developing nervous systems are constantly learning and adapting, that job becomes even more important.

Everyday stress comes in many forms. We often simplify it into three categories: thoughts, traumas, and toxins.

Thoughts include emotional stress, anxiety, school pressures, busy schedules, sensory demands, and major life changes.

Traumas include physical stressors such as falls, sports, repetitive posture, injuries, and the physical demands surrounding pregnancy and birth.

Toxins include chemical and environmental stressors, illnesses, nutrition challenges, medications, and other things the body must process and adapt to.

One stressor usually is not the whole story.

It is often the accumulation of stress over time that matters most.

When the nervous system has difficulty adapting to that stress, patterns of tension and dysregulation can develop. In chiropractic, we refer to these patterns of neurological interference as subluxation.

And that is exactly what we are looking deeper into with INSiGHT Scanning technology.

What Are INSiGHT Scans?

INSiGHT Scans are a group of non-invasive, radiation-free technologies that help us evaluate different aspects of nervous system function.

They are not designed to diagnose a disease or condition.

Instead, they give us objective information about how the nervous system is functioning and where patterns of stress, imbalance, altered tone, or decreased adaptability are showing up.

We use three primary scans:

NeuroThermal Scanning

Surface Electromyography, or sEMG

Heart Rate Variability, or HRV

Each looks at the nervous system from a different perspective. When we put all three together alongside your history, goals, and neurological examination, we get a much clearer picture of what is happening beneath the surface.

NeuroThermal Scanning: Looking at Autonomic Patterns

Our NeuroThermal Scan measures temperature patterns along the spine.

Why temperature?

Because temperature regulation is influenced by the autonomic nervous system—the part of your nervous system responsible for the automatic functions your body performs all day long without you having to think about them.

When we see significant differences, imbalance, or persistent patterns, it gives us additional information about how the autonomic nervous system is communicating and regulating.

This is especially important because the autonomic nervous system is deeply connected with things parents care about every day: eating, sleeping, digestion, energy, recovery, and the ability to move between stress and relaxation.

Rather than looking at one symptom in isolation, NeuroThermal Scanning helps us identify larger neurological patterns that deserve our attention.

sEMG: How Much Energy Is Your Body Using?

The second piece of the picture is our surface electromyography, or sEMG Scan.

This measures the electrical activity associated with the muscles alongside the spine.

But we are not simply checking whether muscles are “tight.”

We want to understand how much energy the nervous system is using to maintain posture and muscle tone, how organized that energy is, and whether the right and left sides of the body are working in a coordinated way.

Think about a child whose nervous system is constantly working overtime.

They may have difficulty sitting still. Their body may always seem tense. They may fatigue easily, have difficulty with coordination, struggle with posture, or seem completely exhausted after holding themselves together throughout the school day.

Those outward signs give us clues.

The sEMG gives us objective information about the neurological tone underneath them.

The scan helps us evaluate patterns involving overall energy expenditure, organization, and symmetry so we can better understand how efficiently the neuromotor system is functioning.

HRV: Measuring Adaptability and Resilience

Heart Rate Variability, or HRV, gives us another important piece of the puzzle.

A healthy heart does not beat with perfectly identical spacing between every beat. Those tiny variations reflect the nervous system’s ability to continually adjust to what is happening around you.

That is why variability matters.

We are looking at adaptability.

Can your nervous system appropriately activate when a challenge appears?

And just as importantly, can it settle back down when that challenge is over?

A child should be able to run, play, concentrate, react, recover, rest, digest, and sleep. Their nervous system needs the ability to move between activation and recovery throughout the day.

Problems arise when the system becomes chronically stuck.

Some kids seem permanently stuck with the gas pedal down—restless, reactive, anxious, overwhelmed, or unable to settle.

Others look completely worn out. Their nervous system has been working so hard for so long that their reserve capacity begins to suffer.

And plenty of kids seem to be both wound up and worn out at the same time.

HRV helps us better understand that balance between sympathetic activation, parasympathetic regulation, overall adaptability, and neurological reserve.

Looking at the Bigger Pattern

We look at the pattern.

Depending on what we learn during your child’s history, examination, and initial assessment, we will use one or more INSiGHT Scans to gather additional information about how their nervous system is functioning.

We consider the stressors they have experienced, what you are seeing at home, their neurological examination, and any scan findings together.

That bigger picture helps us answer several important questions:

Where is the nervous system carrying stress?

How significant are those patterns?

How adaptable is the nervous system right now?

And what does that tell us about the frequency and duration of care your child needs?

Scans Dictate Our Plans

This is one of the biggest differences in our approach at Innate Family Chiropractic.

We do not create the same chiropractic care plan for every child who walks through our doors.

Two children could come to us with very similar concerns and have completely different neurological findings.

Their stories are different.

Their stress loads are different.

Their nervous systems are different.

So their care should be different too.

The INSiGHT Scans help us determine the starting point and establish an individualized care plan designed around what that nervous system needs.

Then, through gentle, neurologically focused chiropractic adjustments, our goal is to reduce patterns of subluxation and improve the communication and coordination between the brain and body.

Why We Re-Scan

The first scans establish our baseline.

But they are just the beginning.

As your child moves through care, we perform INSiGHT Scans again at important milestones so we can objectively compare where their nervous system started with where it is now.

Of course, we also want to hear about the changes you are noticing at home.

Maybe your child is sleeping longer.

Transitions are easier.

Their digestion is becoming more consistent.

They are handling frustration differently.

They recover more quickly after a busy weekend.

Their focus, energy, or adaptability is improving.

Those “soft signs” matter.

But we also want objective information showing us what is changing neurologically.

Re-scanning helps us evaluate progress, make appropriate changes to the care plan, and determine when your child is ready for the next phase of neurological healing.

Again, we don't want to guess. We want to measure.

Scanning the Nervous System at Every Age

INSiGHT Scans are gentle, non-invasive, and radiation-free, making them useful throughout many stages of life—from babies to teens, parents, and grandparents.

And while the symptoms prompting someone to come into our office change with age, our focus stays the same:

How well is the nervous system adapting to life?

For a baby, nervous system stress could show up in difficulty settling, sleeping, eating, or moving comfortably.

For a toddler or young child, parents could begin noticing sensory challenges, big emotional reactions, difficulty with transitions, or developmental concerns.

For school-aged children and teens, the outward picture could shift toward focus, anxiety, headaches, fatigue, sleep struggles, or a decreased ability to handle everyday stress.

For adults, chronic tension, exhaustion, poor sleep, pain, digestive struggles, or simply feeling constantly “stuck on” could be part of the picture.

Different ages.

Different stressors.

Different outward signs.

But the nervous system remains at the center of how the body responds and adapts.

Looking Beyond the Symptom

Our goal is not simply to chase individual symptoms as they appear.

We want to understand the person underneath them.

That is why INSiGHT Scans are such an important part of neurologically focused chiropractic care at Innate Family Chiropractic.

They give us a window into nervous system function.

They help us identify patterns of subluxation and dysregulation.

They give us objective information for building personalized care plans.

And they allow us to track how the nervous system is changing throughout care.

When your child’s body is giving you signs that something is not quite right, you deserve more than guesswork.

We want to look deeper.

If you are curious about what your child’s nervous system is telling us, give our team at Innate Family Chiropractic a call at 918-272-0303 and ask about scheduling their INSiGHT Scans.
