What Happens When Nervous System Stress Follows a Child as They Grow
“They’ll grow out of it.” Sometimes the symptom disappears—but the underlying pattern of nervous system stress keeps showing up in new ways as your child grows. In this video, Dr.Drake is breaking down what that progression looks like, why regulation matters, and how INSiGHT Scans help us look deeper.
One of the most frustrating things a parent hears is:
“They’ll grow out of it.”
Maybe your baby had colic, reflux, constipation, poor sleep, or seemed impossible to settle.
Then they became a toddler, and the colic was gone—but now you were dealing with intense tantrums, sensory overload, picky eating, or transitions that completely derailed the day.
A few years later, the struggle looked different again.
Now it was focus. Big emotions. Trouble sitting still. Difficulty sleeping. Stomach aches. Anxiety.
And suddenly, you realize something important:
The original symptom disappeared, but your child never truly became more regulated.
That is the piece I want parents to understand.
Kids do not always simply grow out of neurological stress.
Instead, that underlying pattern often grows with them and expresses itself differently as their brain, body, environment, and daily demands change.
That does not mean colic causes ADHD.
It does not mean reflux causes anxiety.
And it does not mean every fussy baby will become a dysregulated teenager.
What it does mean is that when we see a pattern of regulation challenges following a child through different stages of development, we need to stop looking at each symptom as a completely separate event and start looking at the nervous system underneath all of it.
Your child’s nervous system coordinates how they adapt to their world.
It plays a role in sleep, digestion, sensory processing, emotional regulation and many more functions.
When the nervous system is working well, your child experiences stress and then comes back down.
They get upset, and they recover.
They have a busy day, and they settle at night.
They experience a challenge, adapt to it, and move forward.
But when the nervous system gets stuck in a chronic stress pattern, that recovery process becomes harder.
And that is where the symptoms start to change with age.
Think about a baby.
A baby does not have the words to tell you, “My nervous system feels overwhelmed.”
Instead, you see constant crying, arching, poor sleep, or extreme fussiness.
Then that child becomes a toddler.
Now they have more movement, more independence, more sensory input, and more expectations placed on them.
The same difficulty adapting starts showing up as difficult transitions, sensory sensitivities, picky eating, or meltdowns that seem disproportionate to what just happened.
Then school begins.
Now the nervous system has to manage sitting still, filtering noise, following directions, social interaction, and transitioning from one activity to another for hours at a time.
That overwhelmed nervous system now looks like trouble focusing, emotional outbursts, constant movement, fatigue, or difficulty keeping up with the demands of the day.
As kids get older, that stress often turns inward.
Instead of the massive toddler meltdown, you see headaches, stomach aches, sleep struggles, irritability, or anxiety.
And by the teen years, you often hear words like burnout.
They are exhausted.
Their stress tolerance is low.
They feel overwhelmed easily.
They struggle to recover after school, sports, social situations, or a packed schedule.
Different age.
Different symptoms.
But when you zoom out, you start seeing a pattern.
And this is exactly why we do not want parents to simply wait for the current symptom to disappear.
We want to understand what is happening underneath it.
At Innate Family Chiropractic, that starts with your child’s story.
We look at pregnancy, birth, and infancy history, along with any illnesses or injuries they have experienced. We also consider emotional and sensory stress, sleep, digestion, and development. Finally, we look at environmental exposures and the patterns you have noticed over the years.
Because stress is cumulative.
Physical strain, illnesses, poor sleep, overstimulation, and everyday life all place demands on the nervous system.
When those stresses keep stacking up faster than your child’s nervous system adapts, neurological tension and dysregulation become established.
In chiropractic, we call that neurological interference subluxation.
And we do not guess when it comes to finding those patterns.
We use INSiGHT Scans.
These scans give us an objective look at how your child’s nervous system is functioning, regulating, and adapting.
They help us identify patterns of neurological stress that we cannot see simply by looking at behavior or asking where something hurts.
That information, combined with your child’s history and our neurological assessment, helps us build an individualized care plan.
Then, through gentle, neurologically focused chiropractic adjustments, we address areas of tension and subluxation and improve communication between the brain and body.
The goal is not to chase colic or meltdowns.
It is not to chase focus, anxiety, digestion, or sleep individually.
The goal is to help the nervous system become more regulated, adaptable, and resilient so the entire child has a stronger foundation.
So if you have been told, “They’ll grow out of it,” but something in you still says there is more going on, pay attention to the pattern.
Think back.
What did your child struggle with as a baby?
What changed during the toddler years?
What are you seeing now?
Sometimes the individual symptoms look completely unrelated until you put the entire story together.
Instead of asking, “When will they grow out of this?”
Start asking:
“What is their nervous system telling us?”
