They’ll Grow Out of It… But What If They Don’t?

“They’ll grow out of it.”

It is one of those phrases that can sound reassuring at first—especially when you are an exhausted parent desperately hoping that the sleepless nights, digestive struggles, meltdowns, constant congestion, or developmental concerns really are just a phase.

But most infants do not simply grow out of colic. Kids do not grow out of ADHD-related challenges. And teens do not always grow out of anxiety. Instead, the underlying pattern grows with them and shows up later in different ways. Early regulation and sensory challenges may later appear as difficulty managing emotions, trouble focusing, sleep struggles, or other concerns that are called something different.

In this blog, we’ll look at the possible causes, the neurology, the science, and the solutions that may help your child. Maybe this sounds familiar because your child was colicky seven years ago and is now struggling with sensory processing, anxiety, or other challenges.

If that is your story, you are in the right place. We’re going to help you understand the bigger picture and find the answers you need.

Because sometimes kids do not simply grow out of a pattern. The pattern grows with them.

When One Struggle Starts Looking Like Another

Think back to your child’s earliest years.

Maybe they were the baby who rarely settled, struggled to sleep, arched constantly, experienced reflux or constipation, or seemed uncomfortable much of the time.

As a toddler, the digestive issues improved—but transitions became difficult, sleep remained inconsistent, or the tantrums felt bigger than expected.

Then school started, and the challenges looked different again. You noticed difficulty focusing, sensory overwhelm, anxiety, emotional outbursts, headaches, exhaustion, or trouble calming down after a stressful day.

That does not mean one symptom automatically caused the next.

But it does give us an important reason to ask a better question:

Is there an underlying pattern connecting them?

Look Beyond the Symptom

At Innate Family Chiropractic, one of the biggest things we teach parents is that the nervous system coordinates how the entire body adapts.

It helps regulate sleep, digestion, movement, immune function, emotions, focus, sensory processing, and the ability to recover after stress.

When that system remains overwhelmed, children struggle to shift out of stress mode and return to a calmer, more regulated state.

Stress does not come from just one place.

A developing nervous system encounters thoughts, traumas, toxins, illness, physical strain, sensory overload, poor sleep, busy schedules, environmental stressors, and countless other experiences as a child grows.

When those stressors stack up faster than the nervous system adapts, patterns of dysregulation become established.

In chiropractic, we refer to neurological interference and tension within this system as subluxation.

That is why waiting for the outward symptom to disappear does not address the bigger picture.

The Symptom Can Change While the Pattern Remains

This is where “they’ll grow out of it” becomes frustrating for parents.

The colic disappears.

The toddler eventually sleeps through the night.

The ear infections become less frequent.

But if your child continues struggling in other areas, it is important to look beyond whether one particular symptom went away.

A growing brain and body constantly change. The demands placed on your child’s nervous system change too.

What looked like extreme fussiness at six months old can look very different from nervous system overwhelm in a five-year-old or teenager.

The goal is not to chase every new symptom separately.

The goal is to understand how well your child’s nervous system is regulating, adapting, and communicating as a whole.

Don’t Guess. Look Deeper.

That’s where neurologically focused chiropractic care gives us another piece of the puzzle.

At Innate, we start by listening carefully to your child’s entire story—not just what is happening today. We want to know about pregnancy, birth, infancy, development, illnesses, physical stress, emotional stress, environmental exposures, sleep, digestion, behavior, and the patterns you have noticed along the way.

Then we use INSiGHT Scans to objectively assess patterns of stress and nervous system function.

Those scans help us determine where your child’s nervous system is having difficulty adapting and regulating so we can create a care plan specific to them.

Gentle, neurologically focused chiropractic adjustments address areas of tension and subluxation and support clearer brain-body communication.

Trust What You’re Seeing

You know your child.

When their struggles deserve a closer look, you do not have to settle for endlessly waiting to see what happens next.

The answer is not to panic over every symptom or assume every difficult season means something is wrong.

It is to stay curious.

Look at the patterns. Look at the whole child. When those patterns follow them from one stage of development into another, look deeper at the nervous system.

Because sometimes the most important question is not:

“When will they grow out of this?”

It is:

“What is their nervous system trying to tell us?”
