Why We Scan Your Child’s Nervous System Before Building a Care Plan

Your child’s symptoms are important—but they don’t tell us the whole story. INSiGHT Scans help us look deeper at nervous system stress, tone, and adaptability so we can understand where your child is starting, build a personalized care plan, and objectively track progress along the way.

If you’re a parent and you know something is going on with your child, but you’ve had a hard time putting all the pieces together, this video is for you.

You might be noticing that your child just doesn’t seem to handle everyday life as easily as you’d expect. Sleep is inconsistent, digestion is off, emotions feel bigger, focus is harder, or sensory input seems to overwhelm them quickly. Sometimes it’s not one major concern—it’s a collection of little signs telling you their nervous system is working harder than it should.

And as a parent, you see all of those things happening on the outside.

But one of the biggest questions I want to answer when you come into our office is:

What is happening underneath all of that?

How well is your child’s nervous system actually functioning?

How well is it regulating?

And how well is it adapting to the stress being placed on it every single day?

That’s why INSiGHT Scans are such an important part of what we do here at Innate Family Chiropractic.

Because we don’t want to build your child’s care plan based only on the symptom that brought you through the door.

We want to understand their nervous system.

Your child’s nervous system is constantly receiving information, processing it, and deciding how their body should respond.

It helps coordinate sleep, digestion, movement, emotional regulation, temperature regulation, and the stress response.

It is working all day long.

And kids are dealing with a lot of stress.

We tend to break that stress into three categories: thoughts, traumas, and toxins.

Thoughts include emotional stress, school demands, anxiety, and sensory overload.

Traumas include birth trauma, falls, injuries, sports, and physical stress.

Toxins include illnesses, medications, nutrition challenges, and environmental exposures.

Usually, it isn’t one single stressor that creates the problem.

It’s the accumulation.

And when the nervous system is carrying more stress than it is effectively adapting to, we start seeing patterns of dysregulation and neurological tension.

In chiropractic, we refer to those patterns as subluxation.

So the question becomes: how do we actually look deeper?

That’s where our INSiGHT Scans come in.

We use three primary scans, and each one gives us a different piece of the nervous system picture.

The first is our NeuroThermal Scan.

This looks at temperature patterns along the spine, which gives us information about the autonomic nervous system.

That’s the part of the nervous system responsible for all of those automatic functions your child doesn’t have to consciously think about.

Things like digestion, sleep, heart rate, recovery, and shifting between stress and relaxation.

So when we look at that scan,we’re looking for patterns.

We’re looking at how organized that autonomic nervous system is and where stress patterns are showing up.

The second scan is our EMG Scan.

This measures the electrical activity associated with the muscles.

We’re not simply looking to see if a muscle is tight.

We want to know how much energy your child’s nervous system is using to maintain posture and muscle tone.

Is their system working efficiently?

Is one side working harder than the other?

Is their body constantly using extra energy just to hold itself together?

Think about the child who is always moving, always tense, fatigues quickly, or completely falls apart after holding it together all day at school.

Those outward signs tell us something.

The EMG helps us look at the neurological tone underneath them.

Then we have Heart Rate Variability, or HRV.

This is one of my favorite pieces because HRV gives us information about adaptability and resilience.

Your child’s nervous system should be able to respond when something stressful happens.

That’s normal.

They need to activate when they’re playing, learning, competing, or dealing with a challenge.

But they also need to be able to come back down.

They need to rest.

They need to sleep.

They need to recover.

The problem is when the nervous system gets stuck.

Some kids seem like their gas pedal is down all day long.

They’re restless, reactive, constantly moving, and have a hard time settling.

Other kids look completely worn down.

And a lot of kids are somehow both wired and tired at the same time.

HRV helps us better understand how much adaptability and neurological reserve that child has available.

And here’s where this becomes really important.

We’re looking at your child’s history.

We’re listening to what you’re seeing at home.

We’re considering the stressors they’ve experienced.

And then we’re looking at what the scans show us.

That gives us a clearer picture of where your child is starting.

Two kids with the exact same symptom can have very different nervous system patterns—and very different care needs.

Two kids could both struggle with sleep and have completely different scan findings.

Two kids could both struggle with focus, constipation, sensory overload, or big emotions and have very different nervous system patterns.

Their histories are different.

Their stress loads are different.

Their adaptability is different.

Their nervous systems are different.

So their care should be personalized too.

That’s why we often say here:

Scans dictate our plans.

We use the information we gather to determine how much stress the nervous system is carrying, where subluxation patterns are showing up, and what frequency and duration of care gives that nervous system the best opportunity to change.

Then we use gentle, neurologically focused chiropractic adjustments to reduce those patterns of tension and subluxation and improve communication between the brain and body.

But the scans don’t stop at the beginning.

We also re-scan throughout care.

Because we want to know what is changing.

So when parents ask us why we scan, the answer is actually pretty simple.

Because we don’t want to guess.

We want to understand how your child’s nervous system is functioning before we build their care plan.

And then we want to measure how that nervous system changes as they move through care.

If you’ve been looking at your child’s symptoms and wondering what might be happening underneath the surface, I’d encourage you to learn more about INSiGHT Scans.

Head to our website through the link in bio, where we break down the scans in more detail.

And if you’re ready to take a closer look at your child’s nervous system, reach out to our team and ask about scheduling their scans.

We don’t guess. We test.
