What Is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body. Its name comes from the Latin word for “wandering,” which describes the way it travels from the brainstem through the neck, chest, and abdomen.

Along the way, it communicates with the heart, lungs, digestive organs, and other systems involved in breathing, heart rate, digestion, inflammation, stress, and immune regulation.

The vagus nerve is a major part of the parasympathetic nervous system—the branch responsible for rest, digestion, regulation, repair, and recovery. It works in balance with the sympathetic nervous system, which activates the body’s fight-or-flight response.

Your child needs both sides.

The sympathetic system helps them respond to challenges, run, play, compete, focus, and protect themselves. The parasympathetic system helps them slow down, digest food, sleep deeply, repair tissue, regulate inflammation, and recover after stress.

Problems develop when the nervous system has difficulty shifting out of fight-or-flight and back into a regulated state.

More than 75% of the nerve fibers associated with the body’s relaxation response travel through the vagus nerve. It also functions as a two-way communication highway, carrying information from the body to the brain and instructions from the brain back to the organs.

This makes healthy vagus nerve function an essential part of your child’s ability to regulate and recover.

Understanding Your Child’s Immune System

Think of your child’s immune system as a highly trained security team. It constantly monitors the body for bacteria, viruses, allergens, toxins, and other substances that could create a threat.

The immune system has two primary branches.

Innate immunity is the body’s immediate, general defense. It includes physical barriers such as the skin and mucous membranes, along with immune cells that respond quickly when something unfamiliar enters the body.

Adaptive immunity is more specialized. It develops as your child’s body encounters different pathogens, learns to recognize them, and creates a more targeted response for the future.

Both branches are essential. But a healthy immune response is not simply about attacking harder. Your child’s body must know when to activate inflammation, how strongly to respond, and when to turn that response down so repair and recovery can begin.

That requires communication between the immune system, brain, digestive system, respiratory system, hormones, and autonomic nervous system.

When this communication is balanced, your child can encounter stress, create an appropriate response, and then return to a calm, regulated state. When it is dysregulated, the body can remain stuck in an overactive or poorly coordinated response.

The Nervous System’s Role in Immune Regulation

The vagus nerve helps coordinate what researchers call the inflammatory reflex.

When the immune system detects a threat, sensory fibers carry information toward the brain. The brain processes that information and sends signals back through the nervous system to help coordinate the inflammatory response.

Inflammation itself is not the enemy. It is a necessary part of healing and defense.

The body uses inflammation to respond to infections, injuries, and other stressors. But that response must remain coordinated. Your child’s nervous system must know when to increase inflammation and when the threat has passed so the body can shift toward repair.

When subluxation interferes with nervous-system communication, the body has a harder time moving smoothly between fight-or-flight and rest-and-recovery.

This creates a cycle.
