What we commonly call “tech neck” is your body adapting to the position you repeatedly place it in. When you spend hours sitting at a desk, leaning toward a screen, typing on a laptop, gaming, or scrolling through your phone, your nervous system begins learning that forward position as your new normal.
And over time, that affects much more than the way you sit or stand.

That is because this is not simply a habit you need to think harder about correcting. It is a neurological pattern your body has practiced thousands of times.
Your Body Adapts to What You Repeatedly Ask It to Do
Your head is designed to remain balanced over your shoulders. When your head moves forward toward a screen, the muscles across your neck, shoulders, and upper back have to work harder to support it.
Some muscles become tight and overactive. Others stop contributing as effectively.
Research has found an association between sedentary behavior and neck pain. Studies involving smartphone use have also identified changes in cervical posture, especially during prolonged typing and looking-down positions.
But this is not simply about how many hours you spend on a screen. Position, repetition, movement, recovery, and your nervous system’s ability to adapt all play a role.
Your body is constantly receiving information from your body about where you are in space. This is called proprioception.
When you move regularly, that information stays active and accurate. When you remain hunched forward for hours, you repeatedly send your brain a different message: this is where my head belongs, this is how my shoulders sit, and this is how much tension I need to hold myself up.
Eventually, the brain starts treating that stress pattern as normal.
You can consciously correct your posture for a few minutes, but willpower does not erase the neurological pattern your body has already learned.
That is why you can have an expensive chair, a standing desk, and a perfectly positioned computer monitor—and still struggle with tension.
Ergonomics change the environment around you. They do not automatically correct the restricted motion, muscular imbalance, or neurological stress already present in your body.
Stretching, massage, and mobility exercises also provide helpful relief, but when the underlying pattern is still there, the tightness keeps returning.
Your neck is one of the most neurologically important areas in your body.
It contains the spinal cord, brainstem, muscles, and a dense collection of sensory receptors that constantly communicate with your brain.
The neck is also closely connected to the function of your autonomic nervous system, which controls processes you do not consciously manage, including heart rate, breathing, digestion, and recovery.
One important part of this system is the vagus nerve.
The vagus nerve is a major communication pathway between your brain and your internal organs. It plays a central role in the parasympathetic side of your nervous system—the branch responsible for resting, regulating, digesting, and recovering.
Tech neck does not simply pinch your vagus nerve. The bigger issue is the total stress load being placed on your system.
Restricted neck movement, chronic muscle tension, poor sleep, and constant stimulation from screens all add to what your nervous system has to manage.
When that stress continues day after day, your body has a harder time shifting out of protection mode. You feel tense even when you are no longer working. You finish your day exhausted but struggle to settle down. Your shoulders stay elevated, your breathing remains shallow, and your body never fully receives the message that it is safe to relax.
When the nervous system develops unhealthy tension patterns, we call that subluxation.
Subluxation is not simply a bone being “out of place.” It is altered movement and neurological communication between your body and brain.
The nervous system continuously send sensory information to your brain. When movement becomes restricted, that information changes. The brain then coordinates posture, muscle tone, and movement using distorted input.
This creates a cycle.
Poor movement creates altered neurological input. That altered input creates more muscular imbalance and compensation. The compensation creates additional tension and restricted movement.
The longer the cycle continues, the more normal it begins to feel.
