Sensory Processing Disorder & Nervous System Dysfunction: What Parents Need to Know

Sensory challenges aren’t just behavioral — they’re neurological. 🧠 When your child melts down in noisy places or refuses to wear certain clothes, it’s often a sign that their nervous system is overwhelmed. And that goes much deeper than surface symptoms. Birth stress and early subluxation can disrupt the vagus nerve and sensory integration pathways. With INSiGHT Scans, we can see exactly where stress is showing up in your child’s nervous system. The good news? It’s not permanent — and there are natural ways to help! 🌿 Watch this video for a breakdown of the real causes behind SPD and how neurologically focused chiropractic care can bring calm, connection, and control back into your child’s world. 💛

Hi parents, Dr. Drake here. Let’s talk about Sensory Processing Disorder, or SPD — something we’re seeing more and more in our practice.

SPD shows up in different ways: some kids cover their ears at loud sounds, melt down when clothing tags scratch, or seem to shut down in busy environments. Others seem completely unaware of their surroundings, always crashing into things or under-responding.

The common thread? A nervous system that’s not processing input the way it should.

Your child’s brain is constantly receiving sensory signals from the body — through sight, touch, movement, sound, and more. But when that information doesn’t get filtered properly, it can lead to chaos in how they feel and behave.

Now here’s the part most parents haven’t been told: these sensory issues often start with birth stress — things like long labors, C-sections, or use of forceps. These experiences can create misalignments, or subluxations, in the spine and brainstem that interfere with how well the vagus nerve and other key pathways regulate the body.

That’s why in our office we don’t guess. We use INSiGHT Scans to see how the nervous system is functioning — pinpointing areas of stress and dysregulation that are holding your child back.

Once we know what’s going on, we tailor chiropractic care to gently and effectively support your child’s sensory development from the inside out.

If you’re feeling stuck with therapy alone, or want to explore options beyond “wait and see,” we’re here for you. Real change starts with getting to the root cause.
