Raising Resilient Kids Starts With the Nervous System

When you think about raising a resilient child, emotional strength may come to mind. But resilience is also how your child’s body responds to illness, digests food during stressful seasons, sleeps, maintains energy, and recovers after physical or emotional challenges. The nervous system helps coordinate all of it. A resilient nervous system can respond when something is difficult, adapt to what is happening, and gradually guide the body back toward regulation and recovery. The goal is not to remove every stressor from your child’s life. It is to help build a nervous system that is better prepared to move through stress without remaining stuck there. Parents, when you think about raising a resilient child, you may think about emotional strength.

You want your child to handle disappointment, work through frustration, adapt when plans change, and bounce back after a hard day.

But resilience is much bigger than behavior and emotions.

It is also how your child’s immune system responds when they are exposed to illness, how their digestive system functions during stressful seasons, how well they sleep, and how easily their body returns to balance after a busy week.

Resilience is a whole-body process—and it starts with the nervous system.

Maybe your child has big emotional reactions and takes hours to feel settled again.

Maybe minor illness seems to completely wipe them out, or they struggle to fully recover before the next one begins.

Maybe stress immediately affects their stomach, appetite, sleep, or sensory tolerance.

Or maybe it feels like you are constantly working on one challenge, only for another to take its place.

If that sounds familiar, it does not mean your child is weak, dramatic, unhealthy, or simply needs to “toughen up.”

Their nervous system is having difficulty adapting to the amount of stress their brain and body are carrying.

Your child’s nervous system is the body’s central command center. It helps coordinate emotions, movement, digestion, sleep, and immune activity.

Within it is the autonomic nervous system, which has two primary sides.

The sympathetic nervous system is your child’s gas pedal. It activates the fight-or-flight response and gives them the energy and alertness needed to respond to a challenge.

The parasympathetic nervous system is the brake. It supports digestion, regulation, sleep, healing, and recovery.

Your child needs both.

A resilient nervous system can press the gas pedal when a challenge appears and then apply the brake when that challenge has passed.

That means your child can become frustrated and eventually settle.

They can be exposed to an illness and generate an appropriate immune response.

They can run, play, fall, and recover.

They can experience a change in routine without remaining stuck in stress mode for the rest of the day.

Resilience does not mean your child is calm, happy, or healthy every second. It means their nervous system can react, adapt, restore, and return to its baseline.

In fact, a 2026 working paper from Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child describes the stress response through those same stages: react, adapt, and restore. It explains that the balance between stress and resilience can influence children’s health and development throughout life.

The problem begins when stress keeps stacking up faster than your child’s nervous system can process and recover from it.

That stress may come from pregnancy or birth experiences, illnesses, injuries, disrupted sleep, sensory overload, or an overscheduled lifestyle with very little time to reset.

One stressful event does not automatically create dysfunction. But when the nervous system is repeatedly activated without fully returning to regulation, the gas pedal may begin to feel stuck.

For one child, that may look like anxiety, hyperactivity, impulsivity, or frequent emotional outbursts.

For another, it may look like exhaustion, shutting down, daydreaming, or having very little energy.

But nervous system stress does not stop with behavior.

Because the autonomic nervous system also helps coordinate digestion, immune sleep, and recovery - dysregulation may show up throughout the body.

Your child may struggle with constipation, stomachaches, frequent illness, low energy, muscle tension, or headaches.

The nervous system connects the brain to every organ, muscle, and tissue in the body.

This is why we encourage parents to look beyond a single symptom and ask a larger question:

How well is my child’s nervous system adapting to stress?

An important part of that answer involves the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve helps connect the brain with the heart, lungs, digestive system, and other organs. It plays a major role in the parasympathetic side of the nervous system—the side responsible for resting, regulating, digesting, connecting, and recovering.

When your child feels safe and regulated, their body has more capacity available for digestion, immune coordination, learning, healing, and social connection.

When their nervous system remains stuck in sympathetic overdrive, many of those restorative functions become more difficult.

Research continues to examine how the autonomic nervous system and other stress-response systems work together throughout childhood and adolescence. These years are especially important because the systems involved in responding and adapting to stress are still developing.

So how do we help children build greater resilience?

It begins with supportive relationships.

Children learn regulation through co-regulation. Before they can consistently calm themselves, they often need to borrow calm from a trusted adult.

Your steady voice, physical presence, predictable routines, and willingness to reconnect after hard moments all send signals of safety to their nervous system.

Movement, nourishing food, hydration, quality sleep, and downtime also provide important support.

And children need manageable challenges. We do not build resilience by removing every frustration, disappointment, germ, fall, or difficult experience. We build it by giving children enough support and capacity to move through challenges and recover from them.
