Sick. Better. Sick again. Does it feel like your family is stuck in an endless cycle? Instead of only focusing on symptoms when illness strikes, what if we paid more attention to building your child's natural resilience from the inside out? Your child's nervous system and immune system are constantly communicating, and chronic stress plays a role in how the body regulates inflammation and recovers. That's why we're so passionate about neurologically-focused chiropractic care and helping families build a strong foundation for lifelong wellness! Watch as Dr. Drake breaks down the nervous system connection and why supporting your child's overall health starts long before the next sick day!
Parents, are you tired of that seemingly endless cycle of sickness with your kids?
One child gets sick, then another, and just when everybody is finally feeling better, here comes another round of coughing, congestion, or ear infections.
And every time, you're back to trying to manage symptoms, wondering whether your child needs something else, and asking yourself, "Why does this keep happening?"
You want to raise your kids as naturally as possible. You want their bodies to be healthy, strong, and resilient. But sometimes it feels like they're constantly fighting something.
Well, what if instead of focusing only on getting through the next illness, we started looking at how to build your child's natural resilience from the inside out?
And I'm going to tell you that one of the most overlooked pieces of that conversation is the nervous system.
Your child's nervous system and immune system are constantly communicating. And when we understand how that connection works, we can start building a stronger foundation for their overall health.
Think about what happens when your child gets sick.
You walk down the cough and cold aisle at Target or Walmart, and what do you see?
Decongestants, antihistamines, cough suppressants, and all kinds of products designed to manage individual symptoms.
Everything is focused on the coughing, the runny nose, the congestion, or the fever.
But those symptoms aren't always the enemy!
Fever is part of the body's coordinated immune response. Mucus helps trap unwanted particles, and coughing helps clear the respiratory system.
What I want parents to understand is that supporting their child's health involves much more than addressing symptoms after sickness shows up.
We need to focus on the foundation.
And that brings us to how the nervous system helps coordinate the body's response to stress and illness.
The autonomic nervous system is responsible for regulating many of the body's automatic functions.
And there are two major branches.
The first is the sympathetic nervous system, or what we call fight-or-flight.
This is your child's stress response. It helps them react, stay alert, and respond to challenges.
The second is the parasympathetic nervous system, which is your rest, digest, and recovery side.
This system helps the body slow down, digest food, sleep, and carry out important restorative functions.
Both systems are necessary. We don't want to eliminate fight-or-flight.
We want the nervous system to be adaptable, moving appropriately between activity and recovery.
But here's where things get interesting.
When your child experiences chronic stress, those stress responses influence much more than their mood or behavior.
They affect sleep, digestion, inflammation, and immune regulation.
Imagine your child constantly feeling like they're running from a bear.
Their body is preparing to respond to danger rather than settling into a restorative state.
Over time, that chronic stress response disrupts normal recovery processes and influence how their immune system responds.
That's why we spend so much time talking about nervous system regulation at Innate Family Chiropractic.
We're interested in how well the body is adapting to everything life throws at it.
Another important piece of this conversation is subluxation.
Subluxation involves areas of dysfunction and tension that we're evaluating as part of the bigger picture of nervous system health.
When we're looking at your child, we're not simply asking whether they're experiencing pain.
We're evaluating how their body is moving, where tension is building, and how their nervous system is responding to stress.
And here's something I really want parents to understand. Stress doesn't just mean feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
Your child's nervous system is responding to physical, emotional, and environmental demands all the time.
We like to break these down into three categories: thoughts, traumas, and toxins.
And these stressors begin very early in life.
During pregnancy and birth, a baby's developing body experiences enormous changes. For children, physical challenges or difficult deliveries add to those demands.
But stress doesn't stop there.
Think about everything your child experiences as they're growing.
They're learning to crawl, walk, and play. They're falling off the couch, wrestling with siblings, playing sports, and occasionally running into just about everything in their path!
All of that physical activity is part of childhood, but injuries and persistent tension deserve attention.
Then we have environmental stressors, nutritional challenges, illnesses, and changes to the gut microbiome.
And let's not forget emotional stress, busy schedules, and poor sleep.
What we're really interested in is how well your child's nervous system is adapting to all of those demands.
So how do we get a better understanding of what's happening with their nervous system instead of just guessing based on symptoms?
That's where our INSiGHT Scans come in.
We use this advanced technology to help us get a deeper understanding of your child's nervous system.
Rather than looking only at the symptoms you're noticing at home, we want to evaluate patterns of stress, muscular tension, and adaptability.
Because your child has a history of physical and emotional stressors, but we also want to understand what's happening with their body right now.
These scans give us objective information that helps us evaluate aspects of nervous system function alongside their history and examination.
For example, heart rate variability provides insight into autonomic regulation, including how the nervous system responds to different demands.
We use that information to help guide personalized chiropractic care.
We're not using the scans to diagnose immune conditions or predict whether your child will get sick.
We're looking for patterns that help us understand their nervous system.
Every child is different, and their care should reflect that.
Once we identify those areas of tension and subluxation, we use gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments to address those findings.
Our goal is to improve nervous system function, address physical stress patterns, and support your child's overall nervous system wellness.
I love that this approach, it gives us an opportunity to look beyond one isolated symptom.
We want to hear about your child's sleep, digestion, movement, and how they're handling the demands of everyday life.
We also want to encourage the healthy habits that support natural resilience.
Getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, staying hydrated, moving their bodies, and giving them opportunities to rest and recover.
These aren't separate pieces of health.
They're connected.
Addressing physical tension and supporting wellness is part of the comprehensive approach we provide for families.
This is where I want to bring everything back to that cycle of sickness we talked about at the beginning.
If you've been stuck constantly reacting every time your child gets sick, I want to encourage you to start looking at the bigger picture.
Keep prioritizing those healthy meals, getting your kids outside, encouraging movement, and making sleep a priority.
But don't overlook the nervous system.
The nervous system is involved in how your child's body responds to stress, coordinates recovery, and communicates with the immune system.
That's one of the reasons we're so passionate about neurologically-focused chiropractic care at Innate.
We're not interested in only seeing your child when they're hurting.
We want to help families take a proactive approach to their health, understand their nervous system, and build healthy habits that last.
And if you've been wondering whether your child's nervous system deserves a closer look, we'd love to have your family in our office.
